The pull of the past - CrossFit Competition

CrossFit Semi-finals Weekends are here!

This past weekend's CrossFit semi-finals in Europe stirred up a whirlwind of emotions within me, reigniting a deep desire to return to competitive CrossFit. I feel am just writing this as a to share my reflections, knowing that many others grapple with similar internal conflicts.

Where it started

It all began in 2013, a journey of learning new skills, pushing my limits relentlessly, and becoming OBSESSED fully consumed by the sport. Those years gifted me invaluable lessons, both uplifting and challenging. Obsession does that.

Fast forward four years, achieving a commendable 25th place in the UK and standing on podiums across Europe, I made the bold choice to depart from the Army and fully immerse myself in pursuing CrossFit.

My sights were set on making it to the CrossFit Regionals the following year. I attended the event in Madrid to see what I needed to do. Only to see CrossFit alter it's format shortly thereafter. Disheartened I didn't even compete in the open. Yet, the longing to return persists and I did competing in Romania, Spain, Athens and the UK.

CrossFit became more than a sport; it became my identity.

The accolades, admiration, and sense of accomplishment it brought were undeniably gratifying to my ego. This realisation struck me as I prepared for what would have been my final competition before the onset of COVID-19, only to see it postponed indefinitely.

Post-pandemic and competing many other challenges in endurance and weightlifting combined, I reentered the arena, not with the same attitude, rather seeking the joy of participating in events like the European Championship and the Arnold Fitness Games. Despite transitioning into a phase focused on ultra-endurance, I found solace in still competing alongside the giants of the sport.

Now, as the CrossFit semifinals are here, I find myself immersed in nostalgia, revisiting old videos and reminiscing about the journey.

For me, the essence of CrossFit lies in the crucible of competition—it's where we truly test ourselves. Competition isn't just about winning; it's about elevating each other, drawing out the best in those who stand beside us. Despite CrossFit's emphasis on health, every aspect is timed or scored. We, as humans, are inherently competitive creatures.

And so, I am to confront a question: Can I devote the necessary time and energy to be able to compete once more? I don't know.

Yet, amidst the uncertainty, there's one thing I sorely miss—the camaraderie of a community bound by sweat and shared aspirations. They made the journey enjoyable competition wasn't about dominance but rather about collective growth and support.

One thing remains clear, the pull of CrossFit endures, a testament to its profound impact on my life.

Thanks for reading.
